![]() ![]() They had a trip planned and with the tryout not on the regualr schedule they decided not to change their plans. My parents made every single sporting event I had ever competed in until those 2 days. ![]() The tryout was a 2 day process finding out your fate on the final day in Austin before the drive back to Houston. My best friend was going to tryout and anything that contained the word Olympic seemed holy in itself to an 11 year old so I was all in. In 1986 the pinnacle of soccer in the Houston area was South Texas Olympic Development Program(ODP). Looking back now I realize the coach could physically do what he was asking of us which made me respect him but I don’t know if the information I was getting was any better than what I was getting from my father. My first paid coach took over my under 11 team and I thought now I am going to be amazing. I starting playing for my first competitive club team at the age of 10 with another player’s father but he quickly realized we had outgrown his expertise. He was a former football and baseball player himself and I am sure he was hoping this soccer dream might dye out. When was the next game? Who are we playing? How many games have they won? Who has the most goals? I am pretty sure I drove my dad crazy, who happended to be my coach, for the first 5 years of my soccer career. There was just something about soccer that consumed my every thought. ![]() I played most sports at a young age excelling in baseball, basketball, and soccer. ![]()
